Dear Colleagues and Parents,
I am writing to you let you
know about a group for adolescent boys which begins in mid-February. This
focused, 8 session group is aimed at the development and enhancement of social
skills.
This group is specifically
geared toward boys who have been identified as having problems such as
inappropriate touching or verbalizing, or have had complaints against them from
students or HS staff. Some of these boys are diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome
or Nonverbal Learning Disability (NLD). Many times, however, these boys are
only viewed as "weird" or odd in some socially inappropriate way. More often
than not they have not developed the social skills essential to have a
successful high school experience.
The approach of this group is based on an
action-enabled learning model: specific skills are targeted, discussed,
practiced and then practiced some more. For example, many of these boys, when
they show an interest in girls, do not know how to initiate a friendly
conversation, maintain eye contact, not compulsively talk about heavy machinery
or eagles, be relaxed etc. We will practice, using role-playing of typical
social scenes, to understand and begin to implement these skills in the real
world. This group, which I will lead, will be held in Lexington, most likely at
Lexington HS, where we will have more room to move about.
I have decided to undertake
this adventure, since, in recent years, I see more and more of these boys. They
have a host of challenges and my hope is that this work will at least address
some part of those problems, particularly about how to survive high school.
