Scope and Focus
This group is focused on the development of social skills essential for success
in the high school environment. Structured activities, such as role-playing,
will be used to help these boys learn the art of making and keeping friends, how
to initiate conversations and how to attend to and understand social cues, e.g.
“when a girl does and does not want to talk to you”.
This group is not intended to
replace or substitute for other treatments, such as psychotherapy, speech
therapy or PT or OT. It is intended to be an adjunct to an integrated approach
to help these boys have a more positive HS experience, which is rooted in social
competence.
This is intended to be a fun
approach to developing important skills. The group leader, like a coach, uses
direct instruction, practice within the group and homework. “Practice, practice,
practice” is the name of the game.
This group is
intended for high school boys who have demonstrated significant difficulties in
social relationships. Group size is limited to 6, meeting for 8 one-hour
sessions.
It is specifically geared toward
boys 14-18 who:
|
Do
you know a teenage boy who
has been identified as having behavioral problems such as
inappropriate
touching or verbalizing, or have had complaints against them from
students or school staff?
Has
he been diagnosed with
Asperger’s Syndrome
or
Nonverbal Learning Disability (NLD)?
Many times, these boys are
only viewed as "weird" or odd in some socially inappropriate way. More often
than not they have not developed the social skills essential to have
a
successful high school experience.
We
can help.
